LG Mobile PhonesLG Mobile is a division of the huge LG Electronics Company, based in Seoul, Korea. A merger of two companies, Lucky and Goldstar, LG are recent entrants into the European mobile market, and are desperate to claim number one status from rival Korean manufacturer Samsung.
In the early days, LG mobile phones were nothing special, pretty bland and unexciting. What helped launch LG as a household name in the UK was the release of the LG U8110 on the fledgling Three network. Until this point, Three had been struggling to make headway into the saturated UK mobile market.
Despite having some very competitive tariffs, the handset line-up on Three was pretty poor, with ugly, large bulky phones. The LG U8110 changed that.
All of a sudden, Three had a phone that didn't look out of place against the products its competitors could offer, and in comparison to the existing Three line-up, the U8110 was small and compact.
The next point that helped launch thousands of handset sales was a combination of low handset price and high dealer commissions, enabling retailers to offer amazing cashback deals with this phone. Overnight the half price line rental revolution happened, and LG sold thousands of U8110's to an unsuspecting public.
Riding on the back of this success they produced a whole production line of similar LG phones, upgrading minor features, such as offering a higher quality camera, or giving a better battery life as the U8110 evolved. Although LG handsets such as the U8180, U8210, U8290 and U8360 were never as popular as the U8110, the LG name had arrived and was here to stay.
The next product that caught the attention from LG mobile phones was the LG Shine. Catching the fashion craze for nice and shiny, the LG Shine soon took top spot in the sales figures league among mobile retailers. Hot on the heels of the popular Shine came a collaboration phone with Italian fashion house Prada producing LG's first touchscreen phone that was soon followed by the LG Viewty.
LG continued to deliver the goods across the board, and were amongst the first manufacturers to get an 8.0 megapixel camera phone to market, with the LG Renoir. Touchscreen devices continue to be popular in the LG line-up, with the LG Cookie selling well, especially amongst prepay users. The latest LG handset to take top billing is the excellent LG Arena, which is also touchscreen. With a fluid interface, which LG say shall became the norm across all their handsets, and a high specification feature list, the LG Arena looks set to continue the popularity of LG products.
