From humble beginnings manufacturing paper, Finnish mobile phone manufacturer Nokia have grown to become the leading mobile phone manufacturer in the world. Since the early days of GSM digital mobile phones, Nokia have been the number one manufacturer of mobile handsets, overtaking the US handset maker, Motorola. With a seemingly never ending production line of top selling phones, where Nokia mobile phones lead the market usually follows.

With over a billion handsets sold, Nokia are constantly at the forefront of developing the very latest in communication technology. The core values of Nokia phones are reliability, and usability. All Nokia handsets are based on the same common principle of ease of use, with a menu well laid out and easy to navigate.

The first of the GSM range of handsets from Nokia was the Nokia 1101, a common looking block designed handset. The first of the handsets to carry the familiar Nokia tone was launched a few years later, part of the Nokia 2100 series.

Since those early days Nokia phones have proven to be the most popular available, thanks to the simple usability of the menu system. Memorable phones from Nokia in the early days include the Nokia 2110, the first 'default' business phone, the Nokia 8110 'banana phone', and one of the most sold Nokia handsets of all time, the still sought after Nokia 6310.

Innovation has always been at the heart of Nokia development, and Nokia were the first to release a WAP enabled handset to market, the Nokia 7110. As network technology evolved to allow for even faster transfer speeds and even easier access to the internet on the move, Nokia released their first 3G handset, the Nokia 6650.

Always looking for ways to evolve the phone, in 2001 Nokia released their first Symbian handset, the Nokia 9210 communicator, and followed shortly after by the Nokia 7650, the first camera enabled handset available in the European mobile phone market. The open source software used on Symbian handsets, a development from the EPOC operating system used on Psion handheld computers was an instant success, allowing users to enhance the functionality of their devices by installing additional software to the phone.

Further developments to the Symbian range of handset led to the development of the Nokia Eseries for enterprise users, and the Nokia Nseries which focus on high end multimedia functionality. To facilitate the availability of software for these devices, Nokia launched the Ovi store in May 2009. Ovi (Finnish for door) is a one stop market for a wide variety of services from Nokia. As well as the store, through Ovi Nokia users can access the Nokia Maps service, share content online, upload photos and videos, and back up important data such as contacts and calendar settings.

Nokia continue to bring new ideas to market, and most recently have been seen to be focussing on the Xpress Music range of phones. Their first ever touch screen phone, the Nokia 5800, is part of the Xpress Music range, and runs on a new version of the Symbian operating system, designed specifically for touch enabled devices. It is a certainty that Nokia mobiles in the near future will feature touch screens heavily as part of their drive for innovation.

Keen to retain their place at the top of the manufacturing food chain, Nokia continue to develop handsets that are ever more packed with features, including access to email, high quality imaging capabilities, built in QWERTY and touchscreen interfaces. The Nokia future is going to be interesting, to say the least.
